Linux specific tools

This page lists the free software tools that can only be found under a GNU/Linux platform.

Please check first the Multiplatform tools, which are mostly installable (if not native 😊 to GNU/Linux also, and they are recommended since they can be used by your colleagues which don't know (yet) how to use free software operating systems

Kate

Ksnapshot

Screencasting or Desktop Session recording

Istanbul
a desktop session recorder for the Free Desktop. Istanbul project records your session into an Ogg Theora video file. To start the recording, you click on its icon in the notification area. To stop you click its icon again. It works on Gnome, KDE, XFCE and others.

A web browser, file manager and file viewer designed as a core part of the K Desktop Environment.

File compression/decompression

Ark
A graphical program for managing various archive formats within the KDE environment. Archives can be viewed, extracted, created and modified from within Ark. The program can handle various formats such as tar, gzip, bzip2, zip, rar and lha (if appropriate command-line programs are installed). Ark can work closely with Konqueror in the KDE environment to handle archives, if you install the Konqueror Integration plugin available in the konq-plugins package.
