category links and lists

I know there must be a simple answer to this, but I have searched up and down without success. All I want to do is this:

link a page to a category

Example: biography page
--image
--data
--narrative
--notes
--reference

And at the bottom of the page, links to the appropriate categories:

people born 1700-1750; women; authors; Quakers; abolitionists

-----
Clicking on one of the links would take the user to that category page with a list of all entries that also in the category. This is so simple, I used to do it without thinking. bracket links around the category to link it, done.

I have looked (in vain) for a cheatsheet that would summarize all these details. ALl I've found so far is the entry in the wiki that details (1) how to link to a page; and (2) how to link to an outside url.

Anyone who has a minute to help: I would be endlessly thankful.

PS Is there a way to be notified by email if/when there are replies to this post?

You could turn categories on or use backlinks

Thank you. It's going to take me a while to acclimate. I do miss the wikimedia links.
